🇧🇬Bulgaria Guide

Pre-Arrival

Everything to sort before you head to Bulgaria's nomad village

Visa and entry requirements

US passport holders can enter Bulgaria VISA-FREE for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned stay. Bulgaria joined the Schengen Zone and adopted the Euro in 2025, so entry rules now align with Schengen standards. No specific accommodation bookings or return flights are required at entry, but having them available is recommended. The Entry/Exit System (EES) has replaced passport stamping with biometric data since October 2025.

The 90-day Schengen rule applies across ALL Schengen countries collectively, not just Bulgaria. Time spent in France, Germany, Spain, etc. counts toward your 90-day limit.

Bulgaria Digital Nomad Visa (for stays beyond 90 days)

Bulgaria launched its Digital Nomad Visa in December 2025. It allows stays of up to 1 year, renewable for another year. Eligibility: remote employees of companies registered outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland, business owners holding 25%+ of a foreign company, or freelancers who have provided services to non-Bulgarian clients for at least 1 year. Income requirement: minimum EUR 31,000/year (~EUR 2,583/month). Process: obtain a Type D long-stay visa at a Bulgarian embassy (4-8 weeks processing), then apply for a residence permit within 14 days of arrival in Bulgaria.

If you only plan to stay 1-3 months, the 90-day visa-free entry is sufficient and much simpler. The DNV is for those wanting to make Bansko a longer-term base.

Flights — fly into Sofia, then bus or shuttle to Bansko

There are no airports in Bansko. Fly into Sofia Airport (SOF), Bulgaria's main international hub. From the US, there are no direct flights — common routings go through Istanbul (Turkish Airlines), Frankfurt or Munich (Lufthansa), London, or Warsaw. Round-trip pricing from the US East Coast typically runs $500-$900. From Sofia, take a bus or shuttle to Bansko (2.5-3 hours). Buses depart from Sofia Central Bus Station (morning, last bus ~11:25) and Ovcha Kupel Bus Station (runs until ~15:49). Tickets cost approximately EUR 9. Private shuttle services like BanskoShuttle.com are also available for direct door-to-door transfers.

Book a private shuttle if arriving late or with heavy luggage. Public buses to Bansko run limited schedules and the last departures are in the early-to-mid afternoon.

Get an eSIM or plan your SIM card purchase

Buy an eSIM from Airalo, Holafly, or Nomad eSIM before you fly for immediate connectivity on landing. Alternatively, SIM cards are available at Sofia Airport from Bulgaria's three operators: A1, Yettel (formerly Telenor), and Vivacom. Vivacom has the largest network and best rural coverage. Since Bulgaria joined the EU and Schengen, EU roaming rules apply — if you already have an EU SIM card, it will work in Bulgaria at no extra cost. Prepaid data plans typically cost EUR 5-15/month for generous data allowances.

If you are coming from another EU country, your existing EU SIM will work in Bulgaria with no roaming charges. Otherwise, pick up a Bulgarian SIM at Sofia Airport before catching the bus to Bansko.

Pack for a mountain continental climate

Bansko sits at 927 meters elevation in the Pirin Mountains. Winters are COLD: average highs of 2-7C (36-45F), lows of -5 to -3C (23-27F), with heavy snowfall from December through March. Summers are warm and pleasant with cooler nights — think 20-28C (68-82F) during the day dropping to 10-15C at night. Pack accordingly: heavy layers and boots for winter, light layers for summer. Occasional thunderstorms in summer. European Type C/F power adapters needed (round two-pin). Voltage is 230V/50Hz — US appliances with non-dual-voltage power supplies need a converter, but laptops and phone chargers are typically dual voltage.

Arrange travel insurance

Healthcare in Bansko is limited — the nearest proper hospital is in Razlog (5 km away), and serious cases go to Sofia (2.5 hours). Carry travel/health insurance that covers medical evacuation. SafetyWing Nomad Insurance (approximately USD 45/month) and World Nomads are popular in the nomad community. EU citizens can use the EHIC/GHIC card for public healthcare in Bulgaria.
