🇭🇺Hungary Guide

Pre-Arrival

Everything to sort before you board the plane

Visa and entry requirements — Schengen 90/180 rule

US passport holders can enter Hungary visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day rolling period under Schengen zone rules. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from the Schengen area. This 90-day limit applies to ALL Schengen countries combined — if you spent 30 days in Spain, you only have 60 days left for Hungary. You cannot work for a Hungarian employer on a tourist entry, but remote work for a non-Hungarian company is generally tolerated on a short stay.

The Schengen 90/180 clock is a rolling window, not a calendar reset. Track your days carefully using an app like Schengen Calculator. Overstaying can result in fines, entry bans, and deportation.

Hungary White Card — digital nomad permit for longer stays

If you plan to stay beyond 90 days, Hungary offers the White Card (Feher Kartya), a residence permit specifically for digital nomads. It is valid for 1 year and renewable once for another year (2 years maximum, then you must leave and reapply). Requirements: proof of remote employment for a non-Hungarian company, minimum net income of EUR 3,000/month demonstrated for at least 6 months prior via bank statements, health insurance covering at least EUR 30,000, valid passport, proof of accommodation in Hungary, and a clean criminal record. Apply online via the Enter Hungary portal (HUF 24,000 fee) or in person at the NDGAP office in Budapest (HUF 39,000 fee). Processing takes approximately 30 days.

Tax advantage: if you stay fewer than 183 days per year in Hungary, you owe no Hungarian income tax. If you exceed 183 days, the flat income tax rate is 15% — still one of the lowest in the EU.
Application fee: HUF 24,000 online (~EUR 65) or HUF 39,000 in person (~EUR 105)

Get an eSIM before departure

Buy an eSIM from Airalo, Holafly, or Nomad eSIM before you fly. A Europe-wide plan with 5-10 GB data typically costs USD 15-25 for 30 days. This gives you immediate connectivity on landing for navigating to your accommodation, using Bolt for transport, and communicating. You will switch to a local Hungarian SIM within the first week, but the eSIM bridges the gap. Important: buying a physical prepaid SIM in Hungary is unusually complicated for non-citizens (extensive paperwork, ID requirements, signatures), so having the eSIM as backup is especially valuable here.

Holafly offers unlimited data eSIMs for Europe at about USD 40/month. Worth it if you need a hotspot backup for your first days.

Pack for Budapest's continental climate

Budapest has a continental climate with four distinct seasons and much more temperature variation than Western European capitals. Winters (December-February) are brutal: temperatures regularly drop below 0°C with grey skies, occasional snow, and short daylight hours. Summers (June-August) are hot, often 28-33°C with occasional heatwaves above 35°C. Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are ideal, with pleasant 15-25°C days. Pack layers for shoulder seasons. If arriving in winter, bring a serious winter coat, thermal layers, gloves, and waterproof boots. Bring a European Type C/F power adapter (round two-pin). Voltage is 230V/50Hz — US devices with universal power supplies (check the label for 'Input: 100-240V') only need a plug adapter, not a voltage converter.

Do not underestimate Budapest winters. Indoor heating in Hungarian apartments is generally good (unlike Portugal or Spain), but the outdoor cold from November through March is genuinely harsh. Pack accordingly or plan your stay for warmer months.

Arrange travel insurance and health coverage

Hungary has a public health system, but as a short-term visitor you will need private coverage. SafetyWing Nomad Insurance (approximately USD 45/month) is popular in the nomad community and covers Hungary. World Nomads and Genki are also solid options. If applying for the White Card, you must have insurance covering at least EUR 30,000 in medical expenses. Private clinics like FirstMed Budapest offer English-speaking doctors and direct billing with over 110 insurance providers. A standard private consultation costs EUR 50-100 — significantly cheaper than Western Europe.

Download essential apps

Install before you fly: Bolt (ride-hailing — Uber does NOT operate in Budapest), BudapestGO (official BKK public transit app for mobile tickets and route planning), Google Maps (download the Budapest offline map), Wise or Revolut (multi-currency accounts for HUF spending at real exchange rates — critical since Hungary uses forints, not euros), WhatsApp (widely used), and Google Translate (download Hungarian for offline use — Hungarian is one of the hardest languages in the world and you will need translation help). For apartment hunting, check Ingatlan.com (Hungary's main rental platform) and Facebook groups like 'Flats for Rent in Budapest'.
