🇨🇾Cyprus Guide

Pre-Arrival

Everything to sort before you fly to Cyprus's cosmopolitan Mediterranean coast

Visa and entry requirements

Cyprus is an EU member state but NOT part of the Schengen Zone. This is critically important for nomads: your 90-day stay in Cyprus runs on a completely separate clock from your Schengen 90 days. You can spend 90 days in Schengen countries, then fly to Cyprus for another 90 days, and your Schengen allowance resets during that time — making Cyprus one of the most strategically useful Schengen-adjacent destinations in the Mediterranean. US passport holders enter Cyprus visa-free for up to 90 days. Enforcement is relaxed and border checks are minimal for EU-adjacent travel. For longer stays, Cyprus offers a Digital Nomad Visa allowing 1-year stays (renewable once) for those earning at least EUR 3,500/month from sources outside Cyprus.

Cyprus's non-Schengen status is its hidden superpower for nomads. Use a Cyprus stint to reset your Schengen 90-day counter while staying in the EU and using the Euro.

Book short-term accommodation to start

Book a serviced apartment or hotel in the Limassol Marina area or Old Port district for your first 1-2 weeks. These areas are central, walkable, and close to the best cafes and coworking spaces. Limassol is more expensive than mainland EU comparable cities — expect EUR 60-100/night for a decent short-term studio. For monthly rentals, a 1BR furnished apartment in the Marina or Germasogeia strip runs EUR 1,000-1,500/month. The Agios Tychonas area (east of the tourist strip) has villa-style accommodation from EUR 1,200-2,000/month and is popular with the crypto and fintech crowd. Zakaki (western Limassol) is more local and 20-30% cheaper.

Airbnb and Booking.com are your best tools. Avoid booking anything on the main tourist Germasogeia strip for living — it is loud and touristy. Prioritize the Marina, Old Port, or Agios Tychonas.
Short-term: EUR 60-100/night. Monthly 1BR: EUR 900-1,500

Get an eSIM before departure

Buy an eSIM from Airalo, Holafly, or a Cyprus-specific eSIM plan before flying. Limassol is served by two airports — Paphos International (PFO, 50 minutes west) and Larnaca International (LCA, 45 minutes east). Both airports have SIM card counters in the arrivals hall. Local operators are Cyta (Cyprus Telecommunications Authority — the dominant carrier, best island-wide coverage), MTN Cyprus (good urban coverage, competitive pricing), and Epic (formerly PrimeTel, best pricing but weaker rural coverage). A prepaid plan with 20-30 GB data costs approximately EUR 15-25/month. Note: standard EU roaming rules do NOT apply in Cyprus for non-EU SIMs, though EU SIMs from other EU countries do work normally here.

Cyta is the recommended operator for the best coverage across the island. If you plan to drive to the Troodos Mountains, Cyta is the only carrier with reliable signal in the highlands.

Cyprus has public hospitals (including the large Limassol General Hospital) but private healthcare is significantly better for non-emergency care. The main private hospital is the German Oncology Center (GOC) — despite its name, it provides excellent general private care. Evangelismos Private Hospital is another solid option. SafetyWing Nomad Insurance (approximately USD 45/month) is accepted at private facilities in Limassol. Healthcare costs are higher than Eastern Europe: a private GP consultation runs EUR 50-80. For the large Russian and Ukrainian expat community in Limassol, several clinics have Russian-speaking staff. Dental care is surprisingly affordable — a cleaning costs EUR 50-80 at private practices.
