🇲🇽Mexico Guide

Pre-Arrival

Mexico visa-free entry, Temporary Residency, eSIM, and Caribbean packing

Visa and entry for US citizens

US citizens enter Mexico visa-free for up to 180 days — one of the world's most generous tourist allowances. Present your US passport at immigration; the agent will stamp your FMM (Forma Migratoria Múltiple) tourist card for a certain number of days — you must ask for the full 180 days if you want them (say '180 días, por favor'). If an agent gives fewer days, politely but firmly ask for more. You are allowed to stay up to 180 days per visit. For longer stays or to work legally for Mexican clients, Mexico's Temporary Residency Visa (Residente Temporal) is available — apply at the Mexican consulate before departure. Income requirement: roughly $1,620 USD/month in consistent bank deposits. The Temporary Resident permit allows 1–4 years.

Always explicitly request 180 days on arrival. Many immigration agents default to 30 or 90 days unless asked. The FMM number stamped in your passport is your legal limit.

Get an eSIM before flying

Buy an eSIM for Mexico (Airalo, 10 GB, ~USD 8) before departure. Cancún International Airport (CUN) — the arrival airport for Playa del Carmen — has Telcel, AT&T México, and Movistar stands in arrivals. Telcel has the best Quintana Roo coverage, including the Riviera Maya corridor. Monthly unlimited plans: MXN 200–350/month (~$12–20). Movistar is cheaper but coverage thinner. SIM registration with passport is required at all Mexican carriers.

Telcel's Amigo Plan (prepaid) offers 25 GB for MXN 200/month — easiest to buy at Telcel stores or Oxxo convenience stores.

Book accommodation and choose your zone

Playa del Carmen has distinct zones. 5th Avenue (Quinta Avenida): the pedestrian tourist artery — great for first arrival, expensive, noisy. 10th–30th Streets near the beach: the sweet spot for nomads — walking distance to beach and 5th Ave but residential enough. Downtown (centro)/Ejidal: local neighborhood, significantly cheaper, 10-min walk from beach, where most long-term nomads settle. Playacar (south): upscale gated communities, less walker-friendly. Monthly furnished apartments: USD 500–900/month near the beach, USD 350–600 in centro. Book 1–2 weeks on Airbnb, then look for monthly direct rentals via Facebook groups.

Facebook group 'Playa del Carmen Housing / Apartments & Rooms For Rent' is the best resource for direct landlord monthly rentals.

Pack for Caribbean heat and hurricane awareness

Playa del Carmen is hot and humid year-round: 27–35°C (80–95°F), with the dry season (November–April) being the most comfortable and peak tourist period. Rainy season (May–October) brings daily afternoon showers and the occasional hurricane threat (historically rare but Hurricane Otis in 2023 was a stark reminder). Pack: lightweight UV-protective clothing, reef-safe sunscreen (required near Mesoamerican Reef), quality insect repellent, water sandals for cenotes and beaches. SafetyWing covers Mexico; World Nomads is the other popular option. Hurricane season means checking weather alerts and having flexible accommodation policies in place.
