About Taipei

Taipei is a revelation for digital nomads who discover it. The city consistently ranks among the safest in the world, its MRT system is immaculate and affordable, internet speeds average 200 Mbps, and the night market food culture is unmatched anywhere on earth. Add in natural hot springs reachable by subway, world-class bubble tea, and a brand-new digital nomad visa (launched January 2025, extended to 2 years in 2026), and you get a city that delivers first-world infrastructure at moderate prices. The trade-offs: a genuine language barrier outside tourist zones, typhoon season from June to September, and a time zone that makes US collaboration painful.

Neighbourhoods in Taipei

Where to base yourself — and why it matters.

Da'an

Walk 10/10

Central, walkable, cafes, universities, parks

Da'an is the most desirable district for digital nomads in Taipei. Da'an Forest Park provides an urban green lung, the cafe density rivals any city in the world, and the MRT makes everywhere reachable. Consistently the first neighbourhood recommended to new arrivals.

Zhongshan

Walk 9/10

Creative, design boutiques, Japanese influence

Zhongshan has a strong Japanese aesthetic — clean streets, excellent ramen, and high-end design boutiques. A growing number of independent cafes with good WiFi make it an increasingly popular nomad base. The Chifeng Street area is particularly good for cafe-hopping.

Xinyi

Walk 8/10

Business, Taipei 101, luxury, high-rise

Xinyi is Taipei's CBD and most modern district, centred on Taipei 101. Excellent for business travel and those who want premium infrastructure, but lacks the warmth and character of Da'an. The Elephant Mountain hiking trail is a 20-minute walk from most apartments.

Gongguan

Walk 9/10

Student area, night market, budget-friendly

Home to National Taiwan University, Gongguan is Taipei's student heartland. The night market runs nightly and the street food is exceptional. Rents are significantly lower than Da'an and the area is perfectly safe. Best for nomads who don't mind a student-area atmosphere.

Yonghe

Walk 8/10

Residential, local, soy milk street, affordable

Yonghe sits just across the Xindian River from central Taipei and is one of the most affordable options that still delivers good quality of life. Famous for its soy milk breakfast culture. A 15-minute MRT or YouBike ride gets you to Da'an. Excellent for budget-conscious long-stays.

💬 From the community

Real experiences from nomads who have spent time in Taipei.

Taipei is criminally underrated on the nomad circuit. The MRT is the most pleasant urban rail I have used anywhere — clean, on time, inexpensive, and card-tap-exit everywhere. I rented a furnished studio near Daan Park for NT$18,000/month ($560) — the neighbourhood is leafy, walkable, and full of great night market food. My apartment fibre hit 600 Mbps; co-working at Regus on Dunhua South Road was used mainly for client calls rather than necessity. 7-Eleven and FamilyMart are literal 24-hour lifelines for everything from printing to package collection.

💡 Tip: Get an EasyCard (悠遊卡) at any MRT station before you leave arrivals. It covers MRT, buses, YouBike rental docks, and many convenience store purchases — one card for the whole city.
