About Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka suffered a severe economic crisis in 2022 but has stabilised considerably — and the recovery has, paradoxically, made it more attractive for nomads: rents have moderated, the government has actively courted foreign remote workers, and the tourism infrastructure has rebounded without yet reaching pre-crisis density. The country packs extraordinary variety into a small island: surf beaches on the south and west coasts, hill country tea plantations around Ella and Nuwara Eliya, ancient Sinhalese kingdoms at Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa, and the colonial city of Galle. English is widely spoken as a legacy of British rule, the food is excellent and incredibly cheap, and the warmth of Sri Lankan hospitality is genuine.

Important Note

US citizens require an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) — apply online before travel for USD 35. Initial stay of 30 days, extendable to 90 days at the Department of Immigration in Colombo. Sri Lanka does not currently have a dedicated digital nomad visa, though a remote worker scheme has been proposed.

Currency & Banking

ATMs are available in Colombo and major towns but can be unreliable in smaller areas — carry backup cash. Wise works well for receiving money. US dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas and for guesthouses. Local bank accounts require a resident visa. The post-crisis currency has stabilised but exchange rates remain favorable for USD/EUR earners.

English is widely spoken in tourism, business, and government — a legacy of British colonial rule that has persisted more completely than in many other former colonies. In cities and tourist areas, daily life in English is entirely practical. Rural areas require Sinhala or Tamil.

Tax Residency

Residency Threshold
183
days

183 days triggers Sri Lankan tax residency with progressive rates up to 36%. In practice, most nomads stay under the threshold. Sri Lanka's tax authority has limited capacity to track foreign income for short-stay visitors. Consult a local CA for longer-stay planning.

Healthcare

Private hospitals in Colombo (Nawaloka, Lanka, Asiri) offer good quality care at very low costs — a GP visit runs LKR 2,000–5,000 (USD 6–15). Public hospitals are under-resourced. Outside Colombo, medical quality drops significantly. Comprehensive travel insurance with evacuation coverage is essential.

SIM & Connectivity

Dialog, Mobitel, and Airtel are the main carriers. Tourist SIMs are available at Bandaranaike International Airport arrivals hall with just a passport — Dialog's tourist package offers 10GB for USD 5. Monthly data plans run LKR 500–1,500. Coverage is strong in cities and coastal areas; hill country can be patchy. eSIMs from Airalo work reliably.

Cultural Tips

  • 1

Remove shoes before entering homes, temples, and many guesthouses — look for a row of shoes at the entrance.

  • 2

The head wobble (similar to India's) means yes or acknowledgment — take time to read context.

  • 3

Sri Lanka's civil war ended in 2009 — the Tamil north and east are now peaceful and accessible, but some areas remain sensitive. Be respectful of the history.

  • 4

Tuk-tuks are the primary short-distance transport — always agree on a price before getting in, or use the PickMe app (Sri Lanka's Uber equivalent).

  • 5

The full moon (Poya) day is a public holiday every month — alcohol sales are banned island-wide on Poya days, and some tourist attractions close. Check the calendar.
