🇱🇰Sri Lanka Guide

Pre-Arrival

Everything to sort before you fly to Sri Lanka

Visa and entry requirements — ETA required

US citizens cannot enter Sri Lanka without a valid Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) — you must apply online before arrival. The ETA is applied for at eta.gov.lk, costs USD 30 for a single entry, and grants 30 days on arrival. It is extendable to 90 days at the Department of Immigration in Colombo or Kandy (fee: approximately USD 60-70 for extensions). Processing is usually immediate online, but apply at least 48 hours before your flight for safety. There is also a long-term Resident Guest Visa option (USD 500/year, allows multiple entries) for those planning extended stays. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure. Print or save your ETA approval — you will be asked for it at check-in and on arrival.

Apply on the official government site eta.gov.lk only — numerous unofficial scam sites charge USD 50-100 for the same ETA. The real price is USD 30.
The ETA is mandatory — you CANNOT enter Sri Lanka without it, and airlines will deny boarding if you do not have ETA approval. Apply before your travel day, not at the airport.

Book short-term accommodation in Galle Fort

Galle Fort (Stari Grad equivalent — a Dutch colonial walled city with UNESCO status) is where digital nomads base themselves. It is a 1 km x 1 km walkable, car-free-feeling historic zone with boutique guesthouses, cafes, and a charming colonial atmosphere. Book a guesthouse or heritage villa inside the Fort for your first two weeks — you need to experience the neighborhood before signing any longer lease. Rooms in Fort guesthouses run USD 30-80/night. For longer stays (1+ month), furnished studios in and around the Fort go for LKR 60,000-120,000/month (~USD 200-400). Unawatuna (4 km south) is beachier and slightly cheaper. Mirissa (30 km east) is worth a weekend trip but too far for a base.

Galle Fort has a strict vehicle size limit through its historic gates — confirm your accommodation has luggage storage at the main gate if driving from Colombo. Tuk-tuks fit through easily.

Get an eSIM before departure

Buy a Sri Lanka-specific eSIM through Airalo before you fly — a 10-15 GB plan costs approximately USD 10-15 for 30 days. This gives you immediate connectivity on landing at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), which is 130 km north of Galle — the journey takes 2.5-3 hours by taxi or the iconic coastal train. Having data from arrival makes this long journey far smoother. Within the first day or two in Galle, replace the eSIM with a Dialog Axiata SIM (Dialog is unequivocally the best network in Sri Lanka) or a Mobitel SIM. A Dialog SIM with 20 GB costs LKR 1,000-1,500 (~USD 3-5/month). Dialog has the best 4G coverage along the south coast, including inside Galle Fort.

Dialog is the only reliable choice for south coast coverage. Airtel and Hutch are much weaker outside Colombo. Get Dialog.

Arrange travel insurance — essential in Sri Lanka

Private healthcare in Sri Lanka is significantly cheaper than Western countries, but quality varies dramatically. In Galle, the best option is private Karapitiya Teaching Hospital or the smaller private clinics inside Galle town. For anything serious, you will be going to Colombo (2.5-3 hours) or potentially evacuated. SafetyWing Nomad Insurance (approximately USD 45/month) covers Sri Lanka including medical evacuation, which matters here given the distance from advanced facilities. World Nomads is a solid alternative. Sri Lanka has had economic instability since the 2022 financial crisis — ensure your policy includes coverage for trip disruption. Pack a basic medical kit (rehydration sachets, anti-diarrhea medication, antihistamines, antiseptic) as rural pharmacy stocks can be inconsistent.

Sri Lanka tap water is NOT safe to drink. Buy bottled water from day one or use a filter. This is non-negotiable.
